Who Audits Self Managed Super Funds?

Once you start up a self managed super fund you will find that to remain compliant your fund must have input from certain professionals. While the smsf is called self-managed it is not totally managed by you. For instance, all self managed super funds must be professionally audited on an annual basis and this is done by the trustee formally appointing an approved SMSF auditor.

When the appointed person does an SMSF audit, it takes the form of two different audits; one for the financial side and one to ensure that the fund is compliant with all government self managed Superannuation rules. If it is not, the auditors must report their findings, or risk their own penalty.

It is up to the trustee of the SMSF to provide the auditor with details of the fund’s financial strategy and the trust deed so that they can do their work properly. Even if the trustee is capable of performing this audit, they are not allowed by law to do so. Instead they must appoint another auditor if the fund is not to contravene the rules and regulations set down.

If the auditor finds that your fund is non-compliant in any way they have to lodge an auditor contravention report to the Australian Tax Office and they will also send a copy of the report to the trustee. If the breach is considered to be slight, the auditor will simply include a letter to the management and suggest ways in which it should be addressed.

The person chosen to audit your SMSF must be licensed to do so and should hold a Public Practice Certificate (PPC). They should also have professional indemnity insurance for at least one million dollars, hold a Public Practice Certificate and undergo professional development on a continuous basis. Only by choosing such auditors can you be sure that your fund remains compliant.
