What is a transition to retirement pension? Once you reach 55 it allows you to draw an income from your super before you permanently retire. It can be an excellent strategy to increase the money you’ll have when you retire if you are concerned that you may not have enough. Even if you do have enough money, it can be a tax-effective way to increase your retirement savings. If you’re over 55 and have accumulated superannuation you can start straight away.
How does it work?
Once you turn 55, or if you have already turned 55, a Transition to Retirement Plan allows you to access the money in your retirement superannuation while you are still working. You are allowed to roll some or all of your super into a ‘non-commutable’ income stream, for example a pension fund, which will pay you a regular income as if you had already retired. However, it does not allow you to withdraw a lump sum.
What you then do is contribute to your super by ‘salary sacrifice’. These contributions are charged at a concessional tax rate which means you may contribute more to your super than you are withdrawing and in turn salary sacrifice may also reduce your personal income tax (depending on your income).
The Transition to Retirement initiative is a fantastic way to increase your wealth.
Even if you have not turned 55 and you have a long way to go to reach that benchmark, salary sacrifice is still a wise choice to make in boosting your super. This will always use pre-tax dollars. Typically a superannuation salary sacrifice calculator will take into account your age, income and desired contribution. This type of calculator will then provide a result of what your tax savings might be given your situation.
