Dirty Jobs Season 5 DVD

Dirty Jobs Season 5 DVD

$49.95

An unflinching look at the unsung American worker, and the unusual but vital vocations that must be done. There’s a lot to learn as host Mike Rowe introduces us to an elite assortment of men and women who make their living doing the most unthinkable jobs. Ep. 1) Animal Relocator: CORN MILLER Mike travels to DeKalb, Mississippi to try his hand at making corn meal by working at an old-fashioned mill house that uses water driven millstones to make the meal from whole kernels of corn. Mike starts out by clearing debris from the water driven turbine that powers the mill and then he opens the gates to allow water to move through the turbine to make the corn meal. Then Mike moves into the millhouse and loads corn kernels into a hopper. The millstones grind the corn into meal and it begins to fill large sacks. As the sacks fill up, Mike pours them into a sifter to remove any larger pieces of corn from the meal. Then he scoops the corn meal into smaller paper bags, putting ten pounds into each bag, and closes each bag of corn meal with a special sewing machine. ANIMAL RELOCATOR Mike travels to Wills Point, Texas, to help with relocating exotic animal species. The species on the schedule for the day’s work is the Pere David’s deer, a Chinese deer that has gone extinct in it’s native land but still exists in captivity across the United States and Europe. Mike helps out by catching one male and one female deer, which will be moved to a larger site than the one they are currently located at in an effort to start a new herd. Once Mike learns how to operate the tranquilizer projector to subdue the Pere David’s, he heads out onto the ranch to find the animals. The male is subdued first. Mike helps load it into a trailer and then he works with a veterinarian to administer medicines before its transport. Then Mike helps catch the female Pere David’s, placing it into another trailer. Mike ends the day helping to relocate the pair in an effort to help provide a population that can one day be reintroduced to its native habitat in China. Ep. 2) Exotic Nanny: Mike heads to Pilot Point, Texas, to work at a ranch that harbors and breeds exotic animal species. He starts out the day by helping with ring-tailed lemurs. Donning a protective helmet and thick leather gloves, Mike helps clean out the lemur pen. The protective gear is worn for a very good reason — lemurs are very territorial and will quickly attack anything or anyone who invades their space – as Mike quickly discovers. He moves on to work with a porcupine, moving it into a small cage to help determine its gender. Next, he assists with some of the baby animals at the ranch. He feeds milk to a baby camel and then takes the camel around the ranch for a little exercise. Then Mike helps feed baby kangaroos and also helps potty train them. Next, he removes a couple of baby joeys from their mother’s pouches and then moves on to a baby three-toed sloth. Finally, he clips the claws of a binturong, also calle

Age and Structural Lag: Society's Failure to Provide Meaningful Opportunities in Work, Family, and Leisure

Age and Structural Lag: Society’s Failure to Provide Meaningful Opportunities in Work, Family, and Leisure

$270

In twentieth-century industrial societies most of us live longer and healthier lives than ever before in history. Yet the social structures and institutions that provide opportunities for our lives are still marked by age constraints that were appropriate a century ago. Education is still primarily reserved for the young; work and family responsibilities are crowded into the middle years; while leisure and free time are allocated to the added decades of retirement. Even the many vital men and women past age 65, or even 55, who want or need paid jobs are regarded as too old to work. Lives have changed, but social structures have not caught up. There is a lag or mismatch between lives and structures. What are the detrimental consequences of this structural lag for individuals and society at large? How do structures change, and how can they be changed to enhance lives at every age? What alternative structures would lessen the burdens of middle age, prepare children for the complexities of the real world, and provide opportunities for productivity, independence, and esteem for older people? Seeking answers to such questions, the twelve chapters in this book bring powerful insights to bear on structural lag from sociology and psychology; and they draw upon history, anthropology, and economics to disclose new perspectives on the past and the present, and new hope for the future. While special attention is paid to structures affecting the old, issues relating to all ages are explored in respect to work, family, education, retirement, and other domains of social life. This is a powerful book, revolutionary in its conceptions and implications, calling for structural changes in society; a newmix of work, family, and leisure. Opening a critical but neglected area, it is the first book publication of a long-range Program on Age and Structural Change (PASC) directed by Matilda White Riley at the National Institute on Aging and involving an international network of scholars. Anticipating Tomorrow: Living and Making a Living in the 21st Century

Anticipating Tomorrow: Living and Making a Living in the 21st Century

$16.95

Technology will change our lives radically. Obsolescence will rapidly become a more pressing dilemma than malfunction. That will produce great uncertainty. We will need to decide between buying and leasing. Will our jobs be secure? Will our education be up to date? Will our politics reflect the times? Indeed, will we even be able to depend on religion for stability? Anticipating Tomorrow provides non-technical setting on much of the technical paraphernalia which is emerging and altering familiar patterns so dramatically–from jobs, to communities, to entertainment, to religion, and to retirement. The material presented will contribute insights and strategies to endure in the new era. It is a catalog of new options rather than a list of new commandments. It emphasizes the ascendant feature of this century is impermanence while stressing durable planning. Anticipate Tomorrow details viable choices which prevent the Age of Information from becoming the Age of Anxiety. The decisions are still yours.

After three years only Thomas Stillcreek and Terrance Trammel, Duke University graduate students, have survived of the original Summer Jobs recruits. Compensation Comparisons Between Sectors in Us

Compensation Comparisons Between Sectors in Us

$83.83

This work attempts to find evidence on the extent of the rent paid to public sector workers in the United States by comparing human capital returns between the public and private sector, controlling for selectivity bias. Using information from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the Current Population Survey (CPS) for the period 1992-2000, I apply propensity score matching methods in order to obtain workers from both sectors comparable in terms of their propensity score or conditional probability of working in the public sector. Results show a wage premium paid to public sector workers ranging from 3.5 percent to 11.1 percent when controlling for union status, and from ?1.6 percent to 6 percent without controlling for union status. Wage differentials widen when adjusted for nonwage pecuniary benefits, with public sector workers enjoying relatively better jobs. In the presence of selectivity bias, the wage premium seems to be underestimated.

Daddy, Tell Us about When You Were a Little Boy: 89 Years and Most of Them Fun

$31.95

Working alone, to start with, I filled three pages of legal pads with two columns per page with notes on events in my life. The title of the book came from the incessant questioning by my daughters for stories of my life, and of the lives of those near and dear to me. I have had an interesting series of events that carried me through prep school, three colleges (with two bachelor’s degrees), three WII essential engineering jobs, and close to three years as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer, over two years of which were in the Pacific. Initially, after nine years working as a mechanic, I began a career in 1947 as a contractor with a small business that my father turned over to me. This ended in 1988 when I sold my 82-year old business that had completed that year over $4 million worth of contracts. In retirement since 1988, my wife and I have spent the winters in a deluxe country club complex in Florida and our summers on our 11-acre farm in Connecticut. I played golf, spent afternoons in the condominium pool, and, following advice given to me by my dad’s brother, a doctor, I have a three-ounce martini every night to keep the blood thin and the heart relaxed.

John Piper writes, ?I will tell you what a tragedy is. I will show you how to waste your life. Consider this story from the February 1998 Reader’s Digest: A couple ?took early retirement from their jobs in the Northeast five years ago when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30-foot trawler, play softball and collect shells. . . .? Picture them before Christ at the great day of judgment: ?Look, Lord. See my shells.? That is a tragedy. ?God created us to live with a single passion: to joyfully display his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life. The wasted life is the life without this passion. God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of him in every part of our lives.? This book is a passionate call for this generation to make their lives count for eternity. John Piper acknowledges that the risks for those who seek to accomplish something in life–risks in relationships for the sake of righteousness and authenticity, risks with money for the cause of the Gospel, and risks in witnessing to the truth and beauty of Christ. Readers will find their passion for the cross of Christ enlarged as a result of reading this book.

 Handbook on Women and Aging

Handbook on Women and Aging

$44.27

Statistics show that women live longer than men, and that they constitute a substantial majority of the North American population over age 50. But more research has been done on the lives of older men, and the lack of empirical data on aging women has perpetuated a number of myths and stereotypes. Twenty years ago, for example, there was a presumption that only males worked and only males retired, though women often held jobs outside the home and these jobs were sometimes their only source of income. Studies of retirement, therefore, rarely treated the experience of women. Many fallacies still remain, despite a growing body of research conducted by women investigators. This reference provides a comprehensive overview of current research on women and aging and helps correct many mistaken assumptions. Chapters are written by expert contributors and are grouped in several broad sections. The first section provides a historical and theoretical perspective on women and aging and covers topics such as sexism and ageism, representations of older women in the arts, and the attitudes of society toward aging women. The second section treats economic issues related to employment and retirement. The third section explores the psychological and physical health of women and includes related information on topics such as voluntarism and religious activity. The fourth section looks at the particular concerns of women from diverse racial and ethnic groups. It also includes a chapter on the special needs of the rural elderly. The final section studies the relationships of older women, including the impact of widowhood and the significance of friendship patterns. Each chapter cites current research andthe volume closes with a selected bibliography of major studies.

Life of a Sharecropper’s Son

$12.26

This book is about the life of a poor sharecropper’s son who grew up during the Great Depression in a rural area of western Missouri. As a young man he never realized the many changes in direction that his life would take during his early years. Three years in the US Navy and a lot of world travel during that time were a start in the right direction. Graduation from technical schools and later a major university opened the doors to positions in the nuclear industry with good paying jobs and retirement benefits. After retirement from US Government regulatory positions, scientific consulting positions from several companies provided excellent after-retirement benefits and technical challenges while providing world-wide travel opportunities. He retired again to a new home constructed on the Coosa River in Alabama for fishing, but later decided to relocate in northwestern Mississippi.

Poverty & the Public Utility: Building Shareholder Value Through Low-Income Initiatives

$15.29

For the low-income U.S. population, the continuing escalation of utility expense exacerbates financial distress and challenges the quality of utility revenues. But research has shown that the poor, in spite of having energy burdens four times that of the average residential household, exhibit no worse credit behavior than any other customer class. People with low incomes often sacrifice food, medicine, and health just to maintain utility service. Working multiple low-paying jobs or living on a fixed retirement income, these individuals are still found helping others in the community. The deadbeat personas assigned to these customers are unfounded. In fact, the low-income represent a valuable market segment within utility service territory. Forty-seven million individuals live near poverty, occupying 35 million households. Together, these households represent 28% of the $159 billion U.S. home energy market. Poverty and the Public Utility will show how utilities focused on serving the

 The Conscience of a Liberal

The Conscience of a Liberal

$17.95

From his earliest childhood memories to the college classroom, from rural Minnesota farm fields and the defense of workers’ rights to his 1990 election campaign promises of politics for the benefit of the people, The Conscience of a Liberal candidly discusses Wellstone’s life experiences and the coming-of-age of his political views. What emerges is an intriguing inside look at Wellstone’s crusade to assert an unabashedly liberal agenda. From the moment he was elected, Wellstone has passionately articulated a path to economic and social justice for all citizens, justice not contingent on the size of a person’s bank account or their political influence. A call for personal politics and deep commitment to beliefs, Wellstone’s tenure as a U.S. senator has been a vigorous, at times outraged, and always active fight for support for farmers, working families, and other Minnesotans; for decent jobs, improved health care, a good education, and retirement security. At once responding to the conservative hijacking of compassion as a political yardstick and explaining his own political record, Wellstone engagingly elucidates what contrasts conservative and liberal interests and, as always, rouses progressives to influence the future of American politics.
